Reading Response Journal (RRJ)

After reading, choose ONE of the following questions and write a response of at least 100 words. Use examples and explanations to support your thinking.  Don’t forget to mention the title and author of your book.

1.  How is a character in your book similar to a character in another book, story, or movie?
2.  What does this book remind you of in your own life?  Why?
3.  What does this book make you wonder about? Why?
4.  What just happened in your book, and what do you think will happen next? Why?
5.  What character do you like most in this book and/or what character do you like least?  Why?
6.  What was one of your favorite lines (or sentences) in what you read today? Copy it down and tell why you liked it. (It can be more than a sentence if you like, but not too long
you still need to write 100 words of your own.)
7.  Explain how the author creates suspense in this book.
8.  How did what you read  today make you feel?  Why?
9.  What do you think about a particular character’s actions?  Was he/she right or wrong to do that?
10.  What is confusing in this book?  Why?  (Be specific)
11.  What advice would you give to a particular character?  Why?
12.  What do you wish could happen in this story?  Why?
13.  Do you think you would read another book by this author?  Why or why not?
14.  Which character would you like to be like?  In what way?  Why?
15.  What other character(s) beside the main character is really important to the story?  How and why?
16.  Make up a motto that one of the characters seems to live by.  How and why does this fit the character?
17.  Which character would you like (or not like) to be your friend? Why?
18.  If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be?  Why would you change it?
19.  What has surprised you in the book?  Why?
20.  What in the book upsets you or bothers you?  Why?

Please note that one does not have to finish the book in order to respond to it.  These are not necessarily “book report” questions.  The questions focus on how a reader connects with or engages with a text. It’s how them make personal meaning of what they read. Also, although most of the questions best fit novels, some questions work just as well with non-fiction or informational texts (e.g., questions #2, #3, #6, #8, #10, #13, #18, #19, #20).

Response:  How about some open-ended sentence starters:

I was surprised…
I wonder…
I wish…
I didn’t understand…
I learned…

Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not?
What kind of person do you think would like the book you’re reading?
How does this book make you feel?
Is there anything about this book that you don’t like?
How did the author of your book get you interested in the story?

Chapters 17-23 of Million-Dollar Throw by Mike Lupica

Chapter 17  was a perfect day for football.Nate knew that today he couldn’t keep worrying .Just play the game, he thought. He started getting loose and stretching. Today he decided he was going to play like nothing was wrong. Usually his coach has a good pep talk with the team and today his coach talked about playing really hard. However, today the Patriots defense started out pretty slow, so three minutes into the game, the Patroits were down  7-0. And now it was Nate’s turn. So the next thing you know, Nate throws an awesome pass and his teamate caught it to tie up 7-7.And at that moment he knew he was back. But soon the other team got a touchdown with the Patriots were down by a touchdown . That’s when Nate knew he was in trouble ‘cause soon the other team got another touchdown to make it 21-7 at halftime. You could tell the defense was playing hard because they were really dirty. During halftime Malcom and Pete were talking to Nate telling him to throw like he use to. But that plan didn’t work because he kept on throwing incompletions. So his coach let him have a break, put Eric in as QB, and benched Nate.

Sydney

Chpater 18 picks-up with Nate being benched, but Nate didn’t mind because Eric was the backup quarterback in practice and the coach wanted to see if he could get the team going. There was three seconds left and Eric threw it to Bradly who made an awsome catch and they won the game. Nate is now afraid that he is going to be on the bench for good and Eric is going to become the quarterback for the team. Nates Dad asked him how the game went and Nate told him they won on the last play. Then, Nates Dad asks him who he made the play to and Nate said he didn’t make the play. Eric made th play to Bradly. Nate’s Mom asked him if he got hurt and Nate said no,  he got benched.Nate went to bed and opened his laptop to see if Abby was on,but she wasn’t online.Nate wanted to know everything about her new school. Then, Abby responded and said that she missed Nate. Nate replied that she didn’t miss him as much as he missed her,but she had already left the internet. Maddie

Chapter 14-16 of Million-Dollar Throw by Mike Lupica

In chapter 14,  Valley won their game even though Nate made only one good pass in the game.  After the game, Nate was interviewed by  Sports Illustrated.  The news showed the pass play  in slow motion later that night. They said, ” Nate, a boy from a small town but with a million dollar arm.”  Amanda

In chapter 15,  Nate found out that three couples were coming to look at their house on Sunday, but Nate hates having people “walk through his world” and hates having to put on a fake smile for the adults and make a conversation with the kids. Later, Nate went to a restaurant called Joe’s with Abby for an early dinner. While they were eating,  Abby gave Nate some bad news.  She might be going to a different school for the second semester. To a school where no one could see.
Bailey

In chapter 16,  we found out that Abby was leaving school  sooner than Nate thought it would be. She said that she was leaving tomorrow.   On the day Abby was leaving, Nate found a present on the front porch and it was from Abby.  When Nate went inside he  ran upstairs and shut the door and unwrapped the paper.  It was an exact painting of the millon dollar throw target.  She signed her name and put the exact date of Thanksgiving night.

This was at the end of the day, and when he practiced it kept reminding him of all his interceptions. A few minutes into Nate’s practice, his DAD arrives! It started out okay when they were talking. But at the end,  Nate Kept complaining, and Nate started his fight with one comment PRESSURE! Nate’s Dad said “You should follow your dream.” Even though Nate felt sorry for himself he should be doing football for fun and becuase he loves it not just becuase anybody else does it. Even though 1 day of his life wasn’t the greatest you have to move on and make the rest of your life better.
Salena
