Lesson #2

Yesterday we drew a heart in our WNB and put the names of people, places, or things that are important to us.  Today, we used the names of those people, places, or things and memories we have of that particular person, place, or thing.

Launching Writer’s Notebook: From the Heart

Lesson #1

On the first page of our Writer’s Notebook (WNB), we drew a large heart.  Then, we broke our heart into pieces putting the name of a person, place, or things in that section.  This page will give us lots of option to write about throughout the year. Check out the example below…

Reading Slip Information

Today you should find a Reading Slip among your child’s papers. Each night your child should be involved with a text in some way for at least 30 minutes. There are various ways to do this.

* Your child can choose a text and read it silently.
* Your child can read out loud to a family member or friend.
* You can read out loud to your child.
* Your child and you can take turns reading a text aloud.

After reading, your child should complete the RS receipt. Most mornings, your child will return the slip with your signature to me. I’ll read through all the slips and then discuss the book with your child. Make their brains think about the text. Ask them some questions about what they read. Make them earn your signature!! See example below.

Reading Slip Discussion Questions

These questions will be helpful for Reading Slip discussions. Pick one or two and discuss them with your child before you give them your endorsement on the Reading Slip.

From the book’s title and synopsis, what do you think this book will be about?
Do you think you’ll like it? Why? Why not?

Characters
Are there any powerful characters in the story? What makes them that way?
Who is the most interesting character? Why

Perspective
Who tells the story?
Whose point of view is used in the story?

Plot
How did the author begin the story to engage the reader?
What is the story problem? How do you think it will be solved?

Setting
Where and when does the story take place?
Where else could the story take place?

Theme
What is the author’s message?
What is the story really about?
Do you think the title is appropriate for story?
What does the story mean to you?
Why did the author write this story?

Could the setting be a real place that exists in our time?
Is the place important in the story? How?

What words did the author use to describe the place?
What can you hear,see,or feel as you read?

How important is the place or time in the story?
How much time passes in the story?
In another time or place how would the story change?

How did the author control the passing of time?
How is the setting like another place you know?
Does the season or time affect the characters or the plot of the story?

What choices did the characters have?
How does a characters actions affect other people in the story?
What was the most important part of the story?

How would you describe the story’s shape?
What is the high point of the story?
What are the important events in the story?

What are the order of events in the story?
Could any of the events be change or could any of them be left out?
Where you able to predict the story ending?
How did the story end?

If you were the author, would you change the ending? How?
What clues did the author give to allow the reader to predict the ending?

What lessons did this story teach about life?
What do you think will happen next in the story?

What do you think will happen next to the characters after the story ends?
Do you think the story really could have happened?

What other voices could tell the story?
How would the story be different if told from another character’s eyes?

Timeline Project

1.A - Construct time lines to demonstrate an understanding of units of time and chronological order.

Select 10 disc cards and use them to create a timeline.

Color code the events you picked for your timeline.  You should have a one sentence summary about the historical event.

News=Blue

Sports=Red

Weather=Orange

Technology=Yellow

Entertainment/Pop Culture=Purple

Industry/Business=Green
