The second quarter was another great quarter for our classroom.  In reading this quarter, we used our class read alouds and independent reading text to practice recognizing clues in reading, ask questions, listen and converse about our reading.  We continued to use graphic organizers to interpret our reading material.  The graphic organizers help us show relationships and make predictions throughout our reading.  The students have written several RRJ responses to their novels to show understanding by using examples and evidence from their text.

During science this past quarter,  we learnt about the structure and function of living systems and how they interact with the environment.  We will begin to learn about physical systems, concepts and properties of matter, energy, forces and motion this coming quarter.

In writing, we published our personal narratives and worked on personal essays.  Both writing pieces went through the steps of prewriting, drafting, revising and editing.

During math, we made scaled soccer fields to study measurement and geometry.  We practice our number sense and number skills using our fantasy football stats and the various starters we do each day at the start of math.  We are currently making scaled football fields to help study data analysis.

In social studies, we focused on European motivations for exploring and colonizing the New World and their lasting effects in North America by building golf courses.  Also, we continue to practice identifying the locations of places during geography games.

I encourage you to scope out your child’s portfolio of work at our online classroom, SportsClassroom.org.  I am always open to discussing your child’s progress.  If you are interested, please contact me.

Flashback: Tangerine

We are reading Tangerine by Edward Bloor during read aloud. The book is heavy with flashbacks, so we are taking the time to determine which events happen in the present and which events took place in the past.
