Muscle System Notes

MUSCULAR SYSTEM<!--enpts-->Push-up<!--enpte-->

The organs of the muscular system are the muscles.

1.There are over 600 muscles in the body.

2.The muscles move the bones and other organs, like the heart and stomach.

3.Muscles are soft but strong tissue. Made up of long, thread-like fibers. Each fiber is a muscle cell.

4.The functions of the muscular system are:
a. movement

b. shape

C. firmness

d. protection

e. hold the body together

There are two types of muscles.
1. Voluntary - control the movement

2. Involuntary- automatic, like the heart

There are three kinds of muscles.

1. striated - skeletal, attached to the skeleton, voluntary muscles. Striped fibers, move quickly, tire easily, powerful

2. smooth - line the walls of many organs of the body and protect them, like the stomach, involuntary muscles. Slower, weaker, work for long periods of time without tiring.

3. Cardiac - heart, only found in the heart, involuntary *

Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular Dystophy

1. Inherited, progressive disease.

2. Causes breakdown in muscle fibers.

3. Symptoms- pain, difficulty moving.

4. Most common in boys age 3-7.

5. Most confined to wheelchair by age 10-12.

Keep muscles healthy (Use them or lose them).
* Exercise

COSI Permission Slip

Fifth Grade COSI Field Trip
Wednesday, May 30th
Dear Parents,
All fifth grade classes will be attending COSI (Center of Science and Industry) in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday, 5/30/06. This field trip supports many aspects of the fifth grade curriculum, including science, social studies, math, and language arts. At COSI, students use all their senses to learn experientially - by touching, exploring, and investigating the world around them. It is a great learning opportunity for our students!
Heritage PTA is supporting our field trip with a $1500.00 contribution. This amount helps cover the cost of the COSI entry fee ($7.00) and the cost of three yellow buses ($32.00 an hour).
The remaining cost of the trip for students is $3.00. This amount needs to be turned in to your child’s teacher by Friday, May 11h. Please make checks payable to Heritage Elementary.
We are in need of at least five chaperones per class. Each chaperone will be responsible for four or five students. Please fill out the section below if you are willing to chaperone. Five chaperones per class are free. However, we do not limit the number of chaperones. Additional chaperones cost $8.50. To be fair, the individual chaperone cost will be based upon the total number of chaperones, dispersing the savings to everyone. Therefore, your cost will be less than $8.50. Do not send any money for chaperoning yet. We will let you know the final cost and how to pay when we have the final totals after May 11th. Please let us know if you have a COSI pass. Remember it must be brought on the day of the trip, or you will have to pay $8.50 at the door.

There will NOT be enough room for chaperones to ride a bus. Carpooling seems the best way to go.

Other important details about our COSI field trip:
• Students should be dropped off at school by 7:45 am
• Students should go to their classrooms when they are dropped off
• Buses will leave Heritage at 8:00 am
• Students may bring CD/tape players, the CD/tape must be school appropriate. They will remain secured on the bus while we are at COSI.
• Arrival time at COSI will be 9:30 am
*Chaperones may want to bring a small snack if they see fit.
• Lunch will be at 10:45 and 11:30(Students need to pack a sack lunch with a drink. Clearly mark student name, class and school on their lunch.)
• Buses will leave COSI at 3:30 p.m.
• Arrival time at Heritage will be 5:00 p.m. Parents, please be at Heritage
when we arrive for student pick up.

Please return the permission slip below with the $3.00 student fee.

Thank you,
The Fifth Grade Teachers
